Before you choose your ideal counter formation, you need to compare both teams quality in order to decide about your team's orders.
Team Mentality
If you are better 1 star or more quality, choose attacking mentality. If your opponent is better choose defensive mentality.
Focus Passing
If your formation has wingers focus passing should be set on down both flanks. If your formation has AMC focus passing should be set on through the middle.
Pressing Style
Own half will do for 95% of your games. Whole pitch is only suggested when your opponent is really weak and you need to dominate the match.
Tackling Style
Normal for any team with a small roster to avoid injuries/cards. Hard for every team with a full roster that can take the suffering throughout whole season. Dont even try easy option.
Passing Style
Short will provide passes only if your lines are close to each other.(for example AML+AMR between middlefielders and strikers). If you are not sure about it, it is recommended to go with mixed. Long blends well with defensive mentality and counter attacks checked.
On a side note: short passing will boost your passes completed % ingame stat, while long passing will make your attacks occur faster.
Marking Style
Always play zonal because this way your players cover each other.
  The following are only suggestions, they are not game changers.
Let's not forget there is a thing called RNG (Random Number Generator) and sometimes can mess things up pretty bad, no matter how awesome you are as a Football Manager.

Use at your own risk. If you have to choose one formation out of two or more, pick the one your players are better than your opponent's and on good shape at that given time.

DeleteYou can boost his morale, but in the end the best thing you can do is to allow him play and hope he scores. There is no direct way to influence a player on how to score for obvious reasons ;)

ReplyDeleteCounter formations table is under constant update. For example 4-5-1 V-Style does NO longer counter 4-4-2 as it has been considered obsolete for this formation.
ReplyDelete+ very helpful. My team's quality was 19+ and opponent's was 27+. Played with 45%-55% ball possesion. Scored first, but, however, the opponent's players were better in class, so the result was 1-2. I've lost but 2 goals from the opponent with 8 quality advance is not so bad. Thanks mate. How about the Arrow setting?
ReplyDeleteArrows wont make a huge difference. Try basic tactics with arrows. For example :If you play with attacking mentality, place 3 blue arrows on your 3 dmc's to secure your defence.

ReplyDeleteA 3 star better opponent maybe needs more dedication to defence than 4-3N-2W-1 has to offer. Give your team a great motivation by maximizing win bonus. Play against him 4-5-1 V-style.Passing through the flanks, long passing, pressing own half, hard tackling, man to man. No offside trap. Mentality normal (30% my choice) because it is risky, or even better defensive with counterattack involved (70% my choice). Blue arrows on your 3 dmc's and red arrow on your striker. The final choice is yours, good luck bro!

DeleteHey man! thanks for reply and good advices, I played 4-5-1 v-style with defensive and counterattack because that has given me great result in previous games versus better opponents. I unfortunately lost 3-5, even though I had some mates to cheer me on, somehow my players decided to play worse than they usually do. By the way, what is the logic behind having man-to-man? Trying to get more depthful insight in what the different orders accomplish, their pros and cons. Anyhow I'm playing champions league finale tomorrow against similiar starleveled opponent. Shall I continue with same strategy even though I didn't work this finale? Cheers.
DeleteSad thing you lost that game. Sometimes the game decides your team has to play bad without any logic explanation. At least it happened to a superior team you should lose most of time and you managed to score x3 with just one striker. Since your players underperformed, next final try zonal marking style(zonal is what everyone uses 99%). This way everyone will cover the player near him and you will enjoy a more flexible defence wall. Man to man is hard core defensive but kinda obsolete, makes the player forget about given plan and hunt down his opponent, no matter whats going on around him.

Excuse me I have just noticed you wrote 3W-5-2 V which is wrong. I was referring to 3NARROW-5-2 V. He plays with 3 mcs - 1 amc - 1 striker. You have no need for dr/dl. Just a dmc and 3 dc's!

ReplyDeleteFor me arrows are just slight improvements that you may (or may not) try. Defensive mentality ? Start with none. Watch the game live, if a striker not good enough, then at halftime try a red arrow on him. Never forget, it is better to study hard about counter formations, than spend time on guessing the proper arrow.

Spend your tokens wisely if a player is young, so you can use him a longer time. You can check his contract / years left (at bottom left side of his info window). When a fresh season is around, you will see a text there like : "X player will retire this season" or "X player will not retire this season. I am sorry but some players play more years than others before they retire, there is no rule about age retirement.

DeleteMentality depends on your opponent. For example, If he is weaker or equal you should go with attacking mentality.
Tackling should be set on normal or even hard if you can replace a banned player, depends on how complete is your roster.
Passing is something you can focus on players you start with. For example you can not set passing through the flanks on narrow diamond formation, can you? How about a formation like 4-1-4-1 where you can feed passes from all sides, which is the best passing option ???? You tell me which player at your middlefield is going to play well and I will suggest you feed passes through him. I am sorry no clear answer on this.
Marking should be set on zonal most of times. Pressing on your own half is considered a safer option. Counterattack blends well with defensive mentality and long passes. Offside trap needs a fast defence to execute well. Are you faster than your opponent? Dont try it however with more than 3 defenders, 4 defenders might have execution problems.
You should go read thoroughly the top section of this guide for more details. You also need to improvise, there is no tactic that will deliver victory all the time. Good luck my friend ;)

Check your opponent's squad. Check his players quality, check their ratings from previous games, check his main scorer and his goalkeeper. Check everything there is to be checked.
Find his strength and reinforce there. Find his weakness and exploit it. Since you know the counter formation, rest is up to you to decide.
You need to have confidence in you. Never forget, he who dares wins!

4-5-1 V Style. Place your best performing MC's to play as AML/AMR. Each player out of position gets a penalty of -3% ball possession. So -6% possession is a good exchange for the win.
DeleteWatch it live if you can and get the bonus possession back. I agree with being online during all matches, but I also advise you to invest more time in real life than a pc game, no matter how good it is to you.

ReplyDeleteMaybe your AMC underperformed? Just because you lost, it doesn't mean that it ain't working no more. There are plenty of hidden factors in the game and you should accept it as a fact.
DeleteAnother counter ? Maybe 4-4-2 or 4-2MC-2AML/AMR-2 but I would not try them as counter formations, they are just good formations you could take your chances with. First one is the conservative suggestion, while second is a risky one. Good luck !
I assumed that with a hard tackling style there is a higher probability of fouls, so I in most cases chose an easy tackling style, but as i read through your blog, you mentioned never to choose an easy tackling style, why?

Since I see questions raised about crazy formations again and again, I will advise you to 4-4-2 all of them and everytime, because 4-4-2 is a beast against any crazy formation not mentioned in the guide above!

ReplyDeleteHowever, i read in some recent blogs to use either: 4-1-3N-1-1 or 4-1-3W-1-1. and it specifically says 4-1-4-1 OR 4-5-1 V will NOT work. Those showed the results from the matches also.
Another option suggested (with result) was 4-2MC-3AM(AML,AMC,AMR)-1ST.
Any comment on this please?

ReplyDeleteI Did enjoy this game but don't understand, when a higher rating team by 6+, gets beaten convincingly by a weaker team, I had better results being a weaker team than a stronger team that I am now. It seems you don't have to trade for more experienced players because they don't perform, bit of a let down, you spend money and to get supposedly better players to get better results, but instead you get worse.

1 - Counter formation for 5-1-2-1-1 ??
2 - We need more explanations about arrows...a saw this from u (Arrows wont make a huge difference. Try basic tactics with arrows. For example :If you play with attacking mentality, place 3 blue arrows on your 3 dmc's to secure your defence. ) !!!!! IS NOT ENOUGHT BRO!!!!

DeleteSandro, for question 1, my advice would be
- 3N-5-2 V style as suggested by the guide, flank, own, long, zonal, offside if you have fast defenders.
Question 2,
- arrows only guide your players where to focus, other factors that secure good defense would be player defensive qualities, special skills, speed, morale, and opponent players' stats. Possession would also be vitals in dead ball situation. Hope it helps. Cheers

DONT EVER GET FOOLED BY THE AVERAGE QUALITY ALWAYS LOOK AT HIS TOP 11 PLAYERS THAT ARE IN THE GAME IF SOMEONE HAS 11 PLAYERS QUALITY 100 AND 11 QUALITY 50 HIS AVRAGE WILL BE 75 BUT WHEN YOU PLAY HIS BEST 11 HE WILL BE 100 QUALITY NOT 75

ReplyDeletePlay always with your best Team, 4-4-2 is the best tactic and without offside trap. Against strong teams Counterattack always "On". Buy only DC/DR, DC/DL, MC/MR, MC/ML, and ST (Young Players). Your Goalkeeper should be one of the best, and both ST too.

ReplyDeleteIt uses 3N-1(MC)-4(AML,AMC,AMC,AMR)-2 and I was defeated by 5-1 using 4-5-1 V Style. The teams are very even (mine is 103,8% and the other 101.4%).

DeleteHey I'm playing an opponent with a star quality of 102% while my quality is 98%. He plays a 4-2-2-2 hexagon formation. I have a LB suspended so I figured I have to play a 3-man backline. Tell me which formation suits me the best. Wouldn't 3-4-1-2 be overly attacking against a stronger opponent? Should I use a DMC against AML-AMR in 4-2-2-2?
